South Africa - Wildlife Projects
African Pride Project
An environmentally friendly sanctuary for any captive bred big cats, where they will be protected and prosper for the rest of their lives. One of the main purposes of the centre is to be an educational platform to create awareness about conditions that big cats face in captivity, and how animal welfare and enrichment play a vital role in giving them the best captive life possible.
Big 5 Wild Project
The Big 5 Wild project offers you a unique experience in the African bush and allows you to observe and be a part of the research/monitoring teams on the reserve. The focus of this project revolves around some of the key species; elephants, lions, hyenas and leopards.
Chimpanzee Project
Chimpanzee numbers are rapidly declining in the wild and they may be extinct within the next 10 – 20 years if current trends cannot be reversed. Although chimpanzees are not native to South Africa, the projects goal is to care for chimpanzees that have survived the bush meat trade, been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market, or rescued from the entertainment business.
Bush School and Wildlife Project
The Bush School & Wildlife centre was opened in 2006 with the mission of educating and inspiring local children to value their environment and stimulate community development. The volunteering program is designed to give volunteers the opportunity to teach local children, care for injured or abandoned wildlife, and fully immerse themselves in the South African bush.
Horse and Community Project
Experience a one-of-a-kind equine adventure in the pristine countryside of the South African Highlands where you will have the opportunity to work with sport horses as well as trail horses, get involved with the local community, interacting with and uplifting both children and their animals. Volunteer in the local community, working at and uplifting the local schools and learning centre.
Cheetah Sanctuary Project
This Cheetah Sanctuary was founded in 2016 with the primary goal to help prevent the decline of cheetah populations and increase the gene pool through captive breeding programs. Captive-born cheetahs are later released into the protected wild of selected private game reserves in South Africa.
Pre Vet Project
The course is designed for individuals looking to explore or enter the professional field of veterinary science, animal welfare or animal management. Categorised into three distinct learning areas, the project provides a theoretical and hands-on approach to learning. Achieving objectives requires you to experience and interact with wildlife in a game reserve, livestock within a farm and domestic animals within a South African rural village.
Endangered Species Project
This project is ideal if you want to truly experience the wild side of Africa. You will be approaching endangered species on foot and recording their behaviour, location and condition. The collected information is then used by the reserve management and anti-poaching teams, as well as national conservation efforts to help save these endangered species.
Big 5 Wildlife Course
Volunteers will be instructed and guided in many of the disciplines necessary to managing an African game reserve. Specific focus is placed on managing the wildlife, conservation, and reserve maintenance, the cheetah breeding research, elephant care and all research projects.
Shark Conservation Project
This exciting project is situated in Gansbaai – the shark cage diving capital of the world – and is about a 2 hour drive from Cape Town. The coast around Gansbaai is home to multiple marine species. The volunteer programs here offer a limited number of places each year.
Wildlife Farm Project
The Wildlife Farm is home to many orphaned and injured animals, offering care to young orphaned animals, as well as a haven for injured animals while they recover from their trauma. The farm is home to animals including elephants, lions, tigers, cheetahs, the spotted hyena, white lions, and hippo, as well as free-range game such as giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, warthogs, impalas, waterbucks, and the red hartebeest.
Penguin and Seabird Rescue Project
With a limited staff component, SANCCOB relies heavily on the support of volunteers to achieve the mission of the organisation. Not only do volunteers assist with the hands-on work with the seabirds, but also provide assistance in all functions of the centre such as marketing, procurement and fundraising.
